Stockton Wilson Way Now and Then

Wilson Way / Highway 99
Originally East Street

Hobby page only, our practice is Residential Real Estate.

U.S. Highway 50 was created in 1926. It ran through Tracy, up Mckinley (now El Dorado) to Charter Way then East and then North on Wilson Way. Highway 99 turned west on Mariposa Road to Charter Way, then North on Wilson Way, to Waterloo Road and then Left on Cherokee Lane making the combined Highway 50/Highway 99/Wilson Way one of the busiest streets in Stockton. The Highway 99 freeway on the east side of Stockton changed Wilson Way forever. The retail and motels were hard hit. When the city redeveloped the West End along Center and El Dorado it drove the prostitutes further east to Wilson Way. This page is a blend of both past and present.

Mr. Knowles soon made his name known for giving away free pumpkins, plastic hood ornaments along with free drinking glasses and windshield trinkets which attached using suction cups. Every now and then he held drawings to win free cars. "He was extremely talented in deciding upon items to promote the gas station," Carl Knowles, his son recalled. "And he liked working with the general public, to be on hand at the station, his specialty, and in later years inside the store. He loved talking with people." - Demolished 102 South Wilson Way - Former Knowles -
