Perhaps San Joaquin county is most well know for its premier agricultural land, with its diverse climate and topography. Agriculture and ancillary businesses are the county's greatest economic assets. Cattle ranching was the initial commerce in the Valley, while fields of alfalfa and grain were planted to feed all the livestock. Dairy farms naturally followed cattle.

Today the county continues to be thought of as a premier location for moving goods to places they need to be. The Lathrop Sharpe Army Depot is a Defense Distribution Region in the West, amounting S77. 4 million in regional salaries. During 1994, Union Pacific railroad unwrapped its biggest train-to-truck transfer station located right next door to the Sharpe Army Depot, turning San Joaquin County into a major center in transporting agricultural goods and commodities.
