Informational page only, our practice is Residential Real Estate.
The larger Modesto Save-Mart grocery chain opened stores in Stockton during the 1970s, however they could not use the Save-Mart name, but used the Food Bank and S-Mart names, and subsequently have become Stockton's largest acquiring abandoned markets from Albertsons, Fry's and Lucky stores. Dollar General has acquired the Centro-Mart Stores, Walmart has two stores with groceries and has opened a Walmart Neighborhood Market

Food 4 Less is a national warehouse store grocery chain, currently owned by Kroger. It is a no-frills grocery store where the customers bag their own groceries at the checkout. Kroger operates Food 4 Less stores in California, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska and Nevada. In markets that Kroger does not have the rights to the Food 4 Less name, it operates as Foods Co.
There are other stores scattered throughout the United States with the Food 4 Less name, part of franchise agreements with various wholesalers, including Unified Western Grocers and Associated Wholesale Grocers Midwest. These stores have particular penetration in Oregon and central and northern California. The Food 4 Less name was previously used by Fleming Companies, Inc., but as Fleming exited various regions and ultimately collapsed, the rights to the name went to wholesalers who picked up some of Fleming's former customers.
The Nugget company uses the Foods Co name in Northern California, where Kroger is bound by an agreement between Falley's and grocer Nugget Markets, Inc.. All Food 4 Less stores in Northern California are managed and operated by Nugget. Kroger does not have any administrative control over the four Nugget Food 4 Less stores.
Nugget Food 4 Less stores also feature a different selection of products than Kroger Food 4 Less stores due to Nugget's pooling of resources from its upscale Nugget Market stores. Marketing and administration of the Nugget Food 4 Less stores is handled through the Nugget Market Corporate Office in Woodland, California, and any requests for other Food 4 Less stores will be deferred to the Kroger Corporate Office in Cincinnati, Ohio. It is unclear whether Nugget Markets and Kroger will continue the Fleming relationship when the franchise agreement expires.
October 18, 1995 - Gary Podesto, the high-profile owner of all three Food 4 Less supermarkets in Stockton and Lodi, sold all three to two Southern California grocery industry executives with ties to the chains franchiser and supplier. Podesto and other owners of the family corporation that owned the Food 4 Less stores struck a deal Monday evening after months of negotiations.

Open - Trader Joe's - 6535 Pacific Avenue. - 951-7597 - It all started in the 50s... Would you believe they started out as a small chain of convenience stores? It's true. Way back in 1958. They were called Pronto Markets. In '67, their founder, the original Trader Joe, changed their name (yes, to Trader Joe's) and the way they do business. They made the stores bigger (if you can imagine), decked the walls with cedar planks and donned the crew in cool Hawaiian shirts. Most importantly, they started putting innovative, hard-to-find, great-tasting foods in the "Trader Joe's" name. That cut their costs and saved you money. Still does. - Located in the former Village Theater
Open - Super Wal-Mart on Trinity Parkway - Opened July 2012 - Walmart Supercenters are hypermarkets with size varying from 98,000 to 261,000 square feet (9,104.5 to 24,247.7 m2), with an average of about 197,000 square feet (18,301.9 m2). These stock everything a Walmart discount store does, and also include a full-service supermarket, including meat and poultry, baked goods, delicatessen, frozen foods, dairy products, garden produce, and fresh seafood.
Many Wal-Mart Supercenters also have a garden center, pet shop, pharmacy, Tire & Lube Express, optical center, one-hour photo processing lab, portrait studio, and numerous alcove shops, such as cellular phone stores, hair and nail salons, video rental stores, local bank branches (newer locations have Woodforest National Bank branches), and fast food outlets – usually Subway, but sometimes Dunkin' Donuts, McDonald's or Blimpie. Some also sell gasoline distributed by Murphy Oil Corporation (whose Walmart stations are branded as "Murphy USA"), Sunoco, Inc. ("Optima"), or Tesoro Corporation ("Mirastar").
