Cactus, The Mexican Restaurant 18961 N. Lower. Sacramento Rd. Woodbridge, Ca.
Occupying a
circa-1874 building, this terrific restaurant brings a bit of history to the
dining experience. Cactus's creative menu offers a counterpoint -
contemporary cuisine that both honors tradition and updates it. Sizzling,
spicy fajitas are a perennial favorite, and tamales are eminently
satisfying, well-filled and hearty. Even enchiladas boast fillings of
shrimp, crab, and avocado, reflecting Stockton's proximity to the sea. If
decisions come hard, consider a combination plate, and don't forget to
indulge in the homemade chips and salsa. |

Golden Ox 410 W. Kettleman Ln
209-333-0146Family - Most unique: Golden Ox gets this
distinction for offering a drive-through window even though it’s not fast
food and for taking credit cards/ATM at the window. Add to that owner John
Padronas’ awesome toy train collection. Plus, who else sells Hungarian
goulash amid hamburgers and other standard fare? / Former Popeye's

Kiley's Diner Theatre 1030 S. Hutchins St.
- 209-366-2100 - Dinner Theatre - Do you want to get out on the town and do it all:
dinner, desert and live theatre? All three come wrapped as one at Kiley's
Dinner Theatre, a virtual institution for weekend entertainment. On Friday
and Saturday nights, enjoy musical groups, theatre or comedy while chowing
down on some great grub. If you don't live nearby, it's worth the pilgrimage
for this action-packed hot spot, ideal for couples with a desire to rekindle
their romance or those looking for a fun night out. / Former Helwig's Corner. Herb Helwig had the
Helwig's restaurant from 1962-1973 (and it was a German Smorgy), and his
daughter Phyllis (Lehr) ran a beauty parlor in one of the suites on the
right. It was the Three Bears restaurant after that and then Mountain Mike's Pizza. |
La Luna Cafe & Bar / Former Porfie's Mexican
Restaurant / El Charro Cafe
910 S. Cherokee
(Porfie's comments Mexican - Nothing beats a Porfi's melon margarita on a hot day, or any
day, for that matter and whether you're the type who likes it on-the-rocks
or blended makes no difference, Here you'll find standard south of the
border fare like beefy tacos and enchiladas (pile on the salsa for flavor
that packs a mighty big punch). Do keep in mind that regulars and there are
lots of them go ga-ga for house specialties.) |

family dining spot. If you're a fan of garlic and gorgonzola, you'll love
the decadent Scoozi platter. Deserts change seasonally and include triple
chocolate pudding pie, creme brulee and lemon blueberry cheesecake. Fresh
flaky pies are the house specialty. Monday nights offer you the chance

Strings Italian 2314
W. Kettleman Ln
209-369-6400Italian - First impressions can be deceiving, as is the case
with Strings Cafe. The modest location (nestled in the Walmart shopping
center) doesn't do it' flawless reputation justice. You have to stop
in, if only to taste the salad-which is really quite interesting-sprinkled
with savory croutons, raisins and a dressing that pulls it all together with
memorable panache. You thought you were stopping a salad? Not a chance.
You've been reeled in like the rest of us. Move on to the the lasagna which
is superb, or any of the seafood dishes which are surprisingly fresh and
flavorful. |
