WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A REAL ESTATE AGENT, A BROKER AND A REALTOR®?
A Real Estate Agent must be licensed by the state in which they work, a separate real estate license is needed for each state. A real estate can be a Realtor (see below) but an agent must work for a Real Estate Broker.
A Real Estate Broker must be licensed by the state in which they work, can work for themselves, another broker, or employee other brokers or agents and can also be a Realtor (see below).
REALTOR® - A registered collective membership mark that identifies a real estate professional who is a member of the National Association of REALTORS® and subscribes to its strict Code of Ethics.
When I tell someone I'm a REALTOR®, I'm saying I am well informed about the real estate business, and I am a member of the largest trade association in the United States, and I subscribe to a strict Code of Ethics .
It's one word that means a lot--and it's important to keep it that way. Why? The term REALTOR® is the one universal way members can distinguish themselves from others in the real estate profession. When our association accomplishes something good for the community, for example, I get to share in the goodwill that is generated by using the term REALTOR® to identify myself as a member. A Realtor can be either a real estate agent or a real estate broker.
