Arguing with Idiots: How to Stop Small Minds and Big Government
- Glen Beck
FUNNY, IMPRESSIVE, TRUE.
It happens to all of us: You take care of your own affairs when an idiot tells you that weapons are evil, that Prius will save the planet, or the rich finally have to start paying their fair share of taxes.
Just go away! you're thinking - but they just get more offensive. Your heart rate is accelerating. You start to sweat. You can not escape. Your only hope is ... ..this book.
Glenn Beck, author of the # 1 New York Times bestseller An uncomfortable book and Glenn Beck's common sense, has come up with the secret formula of winning arguments against people with big mouths but small minds: knowing the facts.
And this book is full of them.
The next time your idiot friends tell you how gun control prevents gun violence, tell them all about the ban on handguns in England (see page 53). If they tell you that we should copy the British healthcare system, you will read the terrible facts on page 244. And the next time an idiot tells you that vegetable prices will explode without illegal workers, stop saying, "No, they will not," and you'll begin to say, "in fact, eliminating all illegal work will do lead us to spend only $ 8 more a year on products. " (See page 139.)
Idiots can not be identified by voting records, they can only be found by looking for people who hide behind stereotypes, taking sides and believe that bumper sticker slogans are a substitute for common sense. If you know someone who takes the bill, then arguing with idiots will help you to silence them once and for all with the ultimate weapon: the truth.

During the Middle Ages it was common for religious arguments to be presented in written form. This format usually included two characters, each with different angles. There would be questions or statements of one character that were refuted by the other character who was an advocate of the author. With this book Glenn Beck revived an old format for a new era.
The book is divided into ten chapters, each dealing with a single topic, and there are questions to which Beck's character refers. In addition, there are also minor commentaries, sometimes called "A. D. D. Moments" and sometimes direct quotes from people Beck disapproves of, say quotes that put these people in the worst light.
Love him or hate him (there seems to be no middle ground) Beck writes (albeit often humorous) and good. He gives his point of view on one topic and then moves on to the next. Beck claims to be a Liberal rather than a Democrat or a Republican, but I'm sure liberal readers (if there are any who really will finish this book) will be convinced that Beck is just another member of the "big right" conspiracy. " To quote Hillary Clinton at the start of the Monica fiasco, I do not know what he is, because he takes almost as many shots on the GOP as he does on the Dems, so I take him by his word about his party inclination.
Beck is conservative in the sense that he opposes the "big government" and what he calls the "nanny state," which moves on almost every aspect of American life. He fears we are going into this situation, and there are enough signs (for those who want to recognize them) that he may (maybe) be right. I'm a big believer in the politics of waiting and seeing, so I do not judge his theories and opinions.
The book will anger some (liberals) and comfort others (conservatives and libertarians), but it certainly is not boring reading. For those who publish reviews at Barnes & Noble or elsewhere, please read at least the entire book before deciding. That's the only fair way!
