Cliff House
THE THIRD CLIFF HOUSE. A third Cliff House was built in 1909 by Sutro's daughter Emma. It was neoclassic in design and carried on the tradition of sumptuous dining. The Depression and two world wars took their toll on the area however, and the Sutro family sold the Cliff House in 1952 to George Whitney. The Cliff House was remodeled several times before the National Park Service acquired it in 1977. Today the Cliff House is preserved as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Ferry Building
The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market is a California certified farmers market operated by the Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA). The market is open two days a week—Tuesdays and Saturdays. The large Saturday market is held both in front of the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero and on the rear plaza overlooking the Bay. On Tuesday, the market spills out of the Arcades onto the Embarcadero sidewalk. The markets offer produce and flowers from small regional farmers and ranchers, many of whom are certified organic. A wealth of other products include regional artisan specialties such as breads, cheeses and jams.

The Foothills
Today, a visit to California’s gold country provides a chance to visit that past. Most of the towns have pioneer museums, some with model working mines, and the narrow streets, old hotels, and Victorian homes clinging to cliffsides remind visitors of the days when the area was abuzz not only with mines but with assayers’ offices, storefront banks, brothels, gambling houses, and rowdy taverns. But more than that, the gold country offers some downright stunning scenery. The two best times of the year are in spring, when the wildflowers carpet the rolling hillsides, and in late fall, when frost lingers in morning shadows and the leaves turn to brilliant reds and golds

Reno Area
Think of Reno, and your mind could easily fill with images of roulette tables, croupiers and slot machines. What if you don't gamble, or just need a break from the tables this summer? Does this friendly city close to Tahoe have anything to offer besides glitzy resorts, poker chips and games of chance?
There are several great destinations within a day's drive of Reno. Elko, Fallon, Fort Churchill and Graeagle are just a few. A favorite is the town of Genoa, the oldest town in the state. It's a living slice of history nestled in a Carson Valley hillside. The Genoa Bar, the state's oldest saloon, still serves whiskey down the road from the Genoa Courthouse Museum. A few minutes' drive to the south is Walley's Hot Springs Resort, where you can swim and soak in the clear natural pools, just the way the Indians did more than a century ago
